The energy performance of an installation does not depend solely on the equipment chosen. Its sizing, operating conditions, operating temperatures, settings and the quality of maintenance directly affect its consumption.

Indicators for comparing the energy efficiency of HVAC equipment
The COP and SCOP
The COP, or coefficient of performance, expresses the efficiency of a unit in heating mode. It is the ratio between the useful heat produced and the electrical energy consumed under defined operating conditions.
For example, a COP of 4 means that the unit delivers 4 kWh of useful heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed under the measurement conditions considered.
Under comparable conditions, a higher COP indicates better energy efficiency. However, it must be interpreted in light of the unit’s operating conditions.
The COP varies in particular with the outdoor temperature, the temperature of the source used and the temperature required by the installation. Actual performance may therefore differ depending on operating conditions.
The SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) reflects a unit’s heating efficiency over an entire reference season. Unlike the COP, which is measured under defined conditions, it takes several operating conditions into account and thus gives a more representative indication of seasonal performance.
The SEER ratio
The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures a unit’s seasonal energy efficiency in cooling mode. It relates the cooling energy delivered over a reference season to the electrical energy consumed to produce it. The higher the SEER, the better the unit’s seasonal efficiency.
Interpretation: a high SEER means more cooling energy is delivered for the same amount of electricity consumed over the reference season.
COP, SCOP and SEER values should always be compared for equivalent equipment and under the conditions specified by the manufacturer. They are useful indicators for comparing performance, but on their own they cannot determine the actual consumption of an installation.
A higher SEER can help reduce the electricity consumption associated with cooling. However, the actual savings depend on the sizing, operating conditions, climate, settings and maintenance of the installation.
